Death By Branding

Paul Dana was killed in practice for this past weekend's IndyCar race in Miami. Now, you know what a big motorsports fan I am, but what does that have to do with marketing or advertising?

Quite a bit, actually.

Here's why...Paul's death was front page news in Southern Florida this morning, but outside of there, it was pretty small potatoes, if it even made the news elsewhere. Why? Because the IRL's IndyCar series has a terrible brand. Check that, they don't have a brand at all.

For comparison, when I say NASCAR, what do you think of? More likely than not, you see a bunch of stock cars covered in stickers, loud & fast. American style racing. They've built it to be something big & special. It's a specific vision in your mind.

The IRL has no such brand. And that's why very few people will truly know about Paul & what he was about.

In your business world, are you NASCAR or are you the IRL?

Rest in peace, Paul.

BigMouth Move Update

When you move, call Two Men & A Truck. I'm not kidding, I'm extremely impressed with what they did for us. Sure, I'm still living out of a box of underpants & a box of Levi 550's, but it appears that none of our equipment was harmed in the move and the guys got things here 12 hours before they were scheduled to.
The studio is up & running and we've already sent out our first 2 commercials from North Carolina. Your spots can be next!

Branding, Not Bling!

Dateline: Race City, USA

Riots, charred neighborhoods & visits by Jesse Jackson. That's what most of the country knows about Benton Harbor, MI. Throughout the state, it also became known for great creative radio campaigns. Success grows more success and Midwest Family Broadcasting's Creative Director John Hammer is now headed to Charlotte, NC. The doors are open to, where the emphasis is on Branding, not Bling.

Hammer says, "Our philosophy is simple: Make sure your advertisers "Say Something Important."

The difference here is that is an ally to SALES TEAMS who have been traditionally frustrated by the glass ceiling between them and programming. DeeJays who see production as a bothersome thing to do between answering the request lines won't cut it anymore. Today, we need to provide substance that gets results or our advertisers will become the folks who say "I tried radio once, it didn't work."

Clear Channel, Cumulus, CBS Radio, Midwest Family and others can't be wrong! (Okay, they can be...but not this time!). Click and your advertisers will Say Something Important.

Pulling Up Roots

We're getting closer to moving the BigMouthAudio Studio from Michigan to North Carolina. Next week, in fact. We'll be offline from close of business Monday the 13th until 9am Tuesday the 21st when we refire the machines & head back at it.

Email will stay the same: as will the telephone number for the time being. It will be changed and you'll know about it first here!
